Bobo Hand Carved African Helmet

Price

$275.00

This is a hand-carved Bobo helmet mask from the Bobo people of Burkina Faso and Mali. Unlike standard face masks, helmet masks cover the entire head, creating a full transformation for the wearer during rituals and ceremonies. This piece, dating to the mid-to-late 20th century, features bold geometric patterns and an elongated structure, reflecting the Bobo’s deep connection to nature and spiritual forces.

Bobo masks are often used in agricultural and purification ceremonies, calling upon spirits to bless the land and ensure a successful harvest. Some represent protective forces, while others embody spirits that cleanse negative energy from the community. When danced, these masks are believed to connect the physical and spiritual realms, maintaining balance in society.
